$448,000 for Erosion Control

The Sault Ste. Marie Conservation Authority is receiving $448,000 to improve flood control infrastructure.

The funding comes from the provincial government’s Water and Erosion Control Infrastructure Program and will be used for the Conservation Authority’s Water and Erosion Control Infrastructure Program.

The money will be used to pay for three projects, including the Fort Creek channel bank stability enhancement ($37,500), the Fort Creek channel remediation and sediment removal ($30,000), and for repairs to the East Davignon aqueduct, underneath Farwell Terrace ($381,000).

Linda Whalen, conservation authority manager, said the work has already been completed on all three projects.

The city matched the province’s funding to complete the work.

“This investment will help the Sault Ste. Marie Conservation Authority carry out projects to help maintain existing dams and flood control channels,” said Sault MPP David Orazietti in a press release.

Since 2004, the conservation authority has received more than $3 million from the province for source water protection planning and infrastructure.

Easements needed for Erosion Control

The city (Newport Beach) is seeking easements granted by property owners in order to complete several erosion control  projects. A secondary benefit of the erosion control project would be the removal of dense, invasive non-native plants and replacement with drought-tolerant, fire-resistant native plants, the city said.

“In order to move forward, we need to have the easements by November,” city Project Manager Bob Stein said.

Following that, construction would begin next summer after the end of the breeding season for threatened and endangered birds, so the work would be completed by the first rains.

“This is the most dangerous kind of construction you can do,” Stein said, especially when the ground is saturated.

Dust Control Remains An Issue

The issue of dust control on Lake Street north (Wigdahl Point) came back to Emmetsburg City Council Monday night. Adjacent property owners Pete Hamilton and Mary Brown attended to address the council.

Talking on fundamental fairness, Hamilton said the city should maintain the street and the dust control. He told the council that this is a heavily traveled 400-foot stretch of street, used by vehicles, bicycles, walkers, and joggers. He sees no fairness in asking homeowners to maintain the street.

Hamilton has contacted the EPA and DNR to see who is responsible for the dust control. He asked, is this ordinary travel on this road? By the road dust creating a nuisance, he referred to extraordinary travel. Hamilton asked that the city control the dust, and/or control the speed with creates a huge amount of dust.
